This Vietnamese-Inspired Beef Rice Bowl is loaded with tender, savory beef, crispy-edged rice, crunchy vegetables, fresh herbs, peanuts, and plenty of lime. The beef gets coated in a sweet-savory sauce made with oyster sauce, fish sauce, soy sauce, honey, and garlic, while basil and mint keep everything fresh. It’s colorful, packed with texture, and comes together in about 30 minutes, which is exactly the kind of dinner I like on a busy night.
What You’ll Need to Make Vietnamese-Inspired Beef Rice Bowls
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
Serves: 6
Course: Main Course / Lunch / Dinner
For the beef:
1.5 pounds (680 g) beef tenderloin, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons oyster sauce
1 tablespoon fish sauce
1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce
2 tablespoons honey
3 garlic cloves, minced or grated
Pinch of red pepper flakes
For the rice:
4 tablespoons plain or refined sesame oil, divided
1 pound (about 450 g) cooked white rice
3 tablespoons water
For assembling the bowls:
2.5 ounces (70 g) purple cabbage, shredded
4 carrots, cut into ribbons
1 cucumber, sliced
2 green onions, chopped
4 tablespoons basil, roughly chopped
4 tablespoons mint, roughly chopped
4 tablespoons chopped peanuts
1 lime, cut into wedges
What You’ll Need to Do
⇒ Start by seasoning the beef cubes with black pepper.
⇒ In a medium bowl, whisk together the oyster sauce, fish sauce, soy sauce, honey, garlic, and red pepper flakes.
⇒ Add the beef and toss until every piece gets nicely coated.
⇒ Now heat 2 tablespoons of sesame oil in a large skillet over high heat.
⇒ Add the cooked rice and toss it through the oil.
⇒ Then spread the rice evenly across the bottom of the skillet and press it down gently.
⇒ Leave it alone for 3 to 5 minutes. Resist the temptation to keep stirring. We want the bottom to pick up some lovely golden, crispy edges.
⇒ Transfer the rice into six serving bowls.
⇒ Return the skillet to high heat and add the remaining 2 tablespoons sesame oil.
⇒ Lift the beef from the sauce, letting the excess drip back into the bowl.
⇒ Add the beef to the hot skillet. If your skillet isn't very large, cook it in two batches. Crowding everything into one pan will steam the beef when what we really want is a quick sear.
⇒ Cook for around 2 to 3 minutes, turning the pieces so they brown on several sides.
⇒ Pour the remaining sauce into the skillet along with the water.
⇒ Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium and cook for another 3 to 5 minutes, until the sauce has thickened and coats the beef nicely.
⇒ Now build the bowls.
⇒ Top the crispy rice with shredded purple cabbage, carrot ribbons, and cucumber.
⇒ Spoon the beef and that glossy sauce over everything.
⇒ Finish with green onions, basil, mint, chopped peanuts, and a lime wedge.
Give the whole bowl a squeeze of lime just before eating.
These Vietnamese-Inspired Beef Rice Bowls have a little bit of everything I want in a quick dinner.
The beef is tender and coated in a glossy sweet-savory sauce, the rice has those crispy edges, and the cabbage, carrots, and cucumber keep things crunchy and fresh.
Then the basil, mint, peanuts, and lime come in at the end and completely wake everything up.
It’s colorful, satisfying, ready in about 30 minutes, and definitely more interesting than another ordinary bowl of beef and rice.

Instructions
1
Season the beef tenderloin cubes evenly with black pepper.
2
In a medium bowl, whisk together the oyster sauce, fish sauce, low-sodium soy sauce, honey, garlic, and red pepper flakes.
3
Add the beef to the sauce and toss until all pieces are evenly coated.
4
Heat 2 tablespoons of plain sesame oil in a large skillet over high heat.
5
Add the cooked white rice and toss briefly to coat it in the oil. Spread the rice evenly across the bottom of the skillet and press it down gently.
6
Allow the rice to cook without stirring for approximately 3 to 5 minutes, or until the bottom develops lightly browned, crispy edges.
7
Divide the rice evenly among six serving bowls.
8
Return the skillet to high heat and add the remaining 2 tablespoons sesame oil.
9
Remove the beef from the sauce, allowing the excess sauce to remain in the bowl.
10
Add the beef to the hot skillet and cook for approximately 2 to 3 minutes. If necessary, cook the beef in two batches to prevent overcrowding.
11
Pour the reserved sauce into the skillet along with the water.
