Liver Detox: What Do You Mean By Detox?
Aren’t you just happy when the holidays come around? It’s the perfect time to have some epic fun with your friends and family. Whether you’re planning to throw a barbecue in your backyard or visit the beautiful beaches, the fun never ends!
However, during this time of year, you may experience the great temptation of overindulging, then wish you could find a genie to undo the damage.
This genie (your liver) has to then work overtime to neutralize itself by getting rid of the unwanted materials or toxins from your body through a process called detoxification.
What Exactly are Toxins?
I’ve mentioned the word “toxins” above, but you seemed a bit confused. Toxins are substances that can cause harm to the tissues of your body. Toxins include materials such as heavy metals, free radicals, and metabolic end products.
Toxins can enter your body through food, air, and water. They can also be produced within your body through chemical processes.
More on Detox…
Detoxification is a primary function of your body and constantly interact with other bodily functions to improve and optimize your body’s own detoxification systems. The fun part is that it’s simply done by getting out the bad stuff and putting in the good stuff…lots of good stuff!
Your liver is like the maid of your body. It works (without pay) to clean up all the toxins you put in it, hence, keeping all your internal organs operating smoothly and efficiently.
The liver cleanses your blood and eliminates toxic substances that you’ve eaten, inhaled, or rubbed on your body.
When your liver is overworked or when you experience a significant amount of stress (both physical and mental), your liver might find it difficult to maintain its operation.
There are many ways to know when your liver is calling out for help, so you should be totally aware of that. Let’s talk about the 10 signs that show that your liver needs to detox.
10 Signs That Show Your Liver Needs To Detox
Your liver has two roles. It is the primary organ for detoxing as well as digesting the food you consume. Oftentimes, people overburden this precious organ with many dangerous substances that ultimately harm the body.
In turn, the liver cries out for help by showing certain signs. Most people overlook these signs and end up in a hospital bed, or – let me not say. I care so much about your well-being, so here are 10 signs that show that your liver needs to detox:
You may experience:
- Acid reflux/heartburn
- Trouble digesting fatty foods
- Abdominal bloating
- Excessive abdominal fat; pot belly; or a roll around the upper abdomen
- Acne/Rosacea or itchy, blotchy skin
- Pain or discomfort in the liver in the right upper abdominal area under the rib area
- Unexplained weight gain and the inability to lose weight even with a calorie restriction.
- Overheating of the body and excessive perspiration
- Had your gallbladder extracted
- Dark spots on the skin commonly referred to as liver spots
There are other signs to watch for, including:
- Fatty yellowish lumps around the eyes
- High blood pressure
- Sleep apnea or snoring
- High cholesterol and triglycerides
- Mood swings and depression
- Fatigue
These signs show that you need to change something about your lifestyle to help heal your liver. Changes should include (but not limited to) detox and altering your diet.
Comprehensively, these signs prove that your liver may be clogged or blocked up with unhealthy fat.
This condition is often referred to as “fatty liver”. When this occurs, fat causes the cells in your body that act as filters to become too inflamed.
As a result, the many substances that pass through it cannot be filtered out by the liver.
Keep in mind that liver is responsible for cleaning out used blood and returning it to the heart.
If this situation is not altered, you may end up with reprocessed toxins entering your heart by way of uncleaned blood.
Both your heart and immune system may be subjected to the damage of this condition, resulting in rapid aging. (I know that this may be a shocker to you, but that’s just the sad reality of it.)
One effective way of getting rid of the toxins from your body and ultimately healing your liver is by drinking Liver Detox Smoothies. Do these smoothies actually work, though? Let’s first talk about the detox process, then talk about why you should drink detox smoothies.
The Liver Detox Process
Toxins are like little soldiers trying to conquer and destroy the small territories inside your body. To fight back, the liver suits up in its warfare gear and carries out its attack in two phases:
PHASE 1: In the initial phase, the liver takes a toxin and converts it into a less harmful form either through oxidation, hydrolysis, or reduction. In simple terms, the liver uses a chemical reaction to make something that was once very toxic into something less toxic. Got it? Great!
This process, however, produces other toxic byproducts that have to be offset via the ingestion of antioxidants and during the phase two stage of the liver detox process.
PHASE 2: In the second phase, the liver makes the toxin less harmful to the body by attaching a buffer molecule to it. Afterward, the toxin is processed so that it becomes water soluble; meaning that it can be easily passed out of the body through urine.
However, most toxins start off in a fat soluble form that is quite difficult for your body to excrete.
In order for your liver to continue its safe and effective detox operations, both phases must remain at optimal performance.
If your body lacks sufficient nutrients, there might be some trouble around the corner. Besides, if you overload your body with toxins, one phase may start to work faster than the other, causing instability and a worn liver inside your body.
My recommendation is that you eat healthy, staying away from foods that contain excessive amounts of fatty foods and alcohol. I also recommend drinking detox smoothies.
Detox smoothies will do an incredible job at eliminating waste from your body, making you feel much better and preventing you from contracting several health-related diseases.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg. There are many more reasons why you should drink liver detox smoothies. Here are a few more! Enjoy!
Why Drink Liver Detox Smoothies?
According to scientific research, there are many different ways of flushing out toxins from your body. However, my personal detoxing strategy is to consume foods that bind and help to flush out toxins, along with those that support the body’s natural detoxification efforts.
You and achieve both at the same time by drinking smoothies. Not all smoothies will give you a proper liver detox. There are several ingredients to include in your smoothies to transform them into something more powerful and suitable for detoxing.
When packed with the necessary ingredients for extensive liver detox, smoothies can help heal your liver by removing all the unwanted substances from your body.
Again, there are several powerful ingredients that make liver detox as easy as “one, two, three”. Including them in your smoothies will give you the ultimate liver detox experience!
Let’s look at some of the liver detoxing smoothie ingredients that you can use to give your smoothies more detoxing power.
10 Ingredients That Power Your Liver Detox Smoothies
So, you’ve gotten some insight on how to detox your liver. You’re told you to start drinking smoothies, but after months there has been no change. Should you stop drinking those smoothies? Definitely not!
Your smoothie just needs the right ingredients to boost their detoxing power, that’s all. Here is a list of some of the main ingredients to include in your smoothie for that extra detoxing boost:
1| Limes and Lemons
These citrus fruits contain extremely high levels of vitamin C, which help to synthesize toxic materials into substances that can be absorbed by water. Including freshly-squeezed lemon or lime juice in your morning smoothies helps stimulate the liver.
2| Beets
The beetroot is a delightful vegetable with vibrant purple-red color. People often use it in soups, stews, and soups, but beets actually work well in smoothies because of their natural sweetness.
It is easy to add beet juice to a smoothie recipe. The different compounds that give beets their amazing coloring are referred to as betalains.
Betalains have anti-inflammatory properties and aids in cell repair, particularly in the liver; the main site of detoxification. Beets also help to remove unwanted substances from the lymph nodes.
3| Avocado
If you are trying to lose weight by detoxing, the urge to avoid fats usually kicks in. However, healthy fats are vital for cleansing your body.
Avocados have monounsaturated fats that help to release bile from the gall bladder, which promotes the flushing out of toxins from the body.
Additionally, the fats help your body to absorb and use fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K. In company with fat, avocados are rich in fiber, which supports the digestive function and the removal of toxins.
4| Ginger
Ginger is an incredible ingredient for detoxing smoothies. It promotes excellent digestion and helps to flush out toxins from your body by increasing the rate at which food is passed along your digestive tract.
Ginger also makes you feel better when you have an upset stomach and has anti-inflammatory properties.
5| Cilantro
Cilantro is a herb that is great for removing heavy metals from your body.
Not everyone (including myself) is fond of the flavor of cilantro, but the compounds in the leaves of the plant can bind to heavy metals like mercury and lead, and flush them out of your body.
If there’s a chance that you enjoy having cilantro, it becomes easy to add a whole bunch to your next green liver detox smoothie.
However, if the taste causes your taste buds to cry for help, you can try parsley, which has a lesser, but similar effect on the body.
6| Apples
Apples are great for adding flavor to a smoothie without bombarding it with sugar.
Apples, in addition to their natural sweetness, have good amounts of pectin.
Pectin is a compound that absorbs toxins and helps your digestive system eliminate them from your body.
Glucaric acid, which is another compound that is found in apples helps the body remove heavy metals and chemicals that are similar to estrogen.
7| Spirulina
Spirulina is a potent and very nutritive superfood. Spirulina binds and removes heavy metals from the body through a process called chelation.
Spirulina also adds a really great taste to your smoothies. For convenience, it comes in both the plant and powdered form. The choice is all yours.
8| Kale
Kale provides your body with chlorophyll and fiber, supporting its natural detox efforts. Fiber combines with toxins and several other undesirable substances in your digestive tract and helps to remove them.
Chlorophyll aids in the removal of heavy metals and other toxins from your body. Keep in mind that the waste in your body needs to be removed in order to have a successful detox.
9| Cranberries
Cranberries help to flush out toxins and plaque buildup from your body by cleansing the organs that are involved in elimination and the lymphatic system.
10| Arugula
Arugula is a light green that can be easily packed into a smoothie without adding much flavor. It does have a spicy flavor, but the taste is still mild if you include it in a flavorful fruit smoothie.
The compounds found in this green include those that help to quicken the detox process, such as sulforaphane and indole-3-carbinol.
There’s a long list of different ways to power your smoothies with detox-friendly ingredients. Most of these ingredients either makes your smoothie more flavor or can be overpowered by other more flavorful ingredients.
There are ingredients that will not be a tasty treat but can really help to detox your body. Foods such as onions, garlic, fennel, broccoli, collard greens, sesame seeds, cabbage, basil, and artichokes can supplement your smoothie diet.
4 Steps To Kickstart Your Liver Detox Routine
1| The first step to cut down your toxic load is to reduce your exposure to airborne toxins. Some of these dangerous toxins include:
- Perfumes and Nail Polish
- Cleaners
- Gasoline
- Glue and Paint
- Smoke
Reducing your exposure to toxins in food and drinks means that you should avoid things such as:
- Dyes
- Alcohol
- Pesticides
- Preservatives
- Fertilizers
- Brominated and chlorinated products.
- Heavy metal in large fish. I’d recommend that you stick to wild caught salmon.
- Contaminated water (Invest in a filtration unit)
- Switch to plant-based and non-toxic cleaning and personal care products and eliminate petroleum-based preservatives in hair and skin products.
KEEP IN MIND THAT:
- The largest organ in your body is the skin. Therefore, whatever is applied to your skin will be absorbed into your body. I normally live by the saying, “If you’d never eat it, don’t use it on your skin.”
- Even products that are said to be “organic” be may be preserved with toxins. So, be vigilant and look for essential oil preservatives on labels such as lemon oil and orange oil.
- You can use organic shea butter, jojoba, olive oil, coconut oil, and essential oils to create your own skin lotions.
2| Secondly, you should try to alter your eating habits by staying away from foods that will harm your liver.
- Avoid consuming processed foods, sugar, and simple carbohydrates. Instead, eat more organic produce. Eating less cooked food and not overcooking your food are good practices. In addition, using a microwave to heat your food will destroy all of the food’s nutritional properties.
- Steer clear of toxic, low-quality fats like soybean oil, canola oil, and corn oil. Besides, eating animal products from animals that are fed genetically modified feed such as wheat, corn, and soy is very risky. Hence, don’t take part in that practice.
- Get a check up at the clinic or at the doctor’s office for hidden food intolerances and yeast overgrowth. You can also consider testing for heavy metals.
- Don’t consume alcohol. If not, you can limit your alcohol intake.
3| Help repair any damage done your liver and other organs by adding more supportive foods to your diet. Eat lots of raw vegetables, especially dark green leafy vegetables and also those that are brightly colored. Don’t leave out those fruits!
A diet consisting of about 30 % to 40 % of raw fruits and vegetables is ideal. So, try to consume a few servings of raw fruits and vegetables on a daily basis.
These really power your digestive processes because they contain vitamin C, living enzymes, anti-cancer phytonutrients, and natural antibiotic substances.
Drinking smoothies also helps you to gain from these foods. Just toss your raw fruits and vegetables in a blender, blend, then gulp it down! It’s that easy.
Consuming naturally fermented foods such as sauerkraut, natural unpreserved apple cider vinegar, cultured vegetables, and foods that are rich in probiotics also helps. Some probiotic-rich foods include kefir and yogurt, my favorites! Hmmmm!
There are also other essential ingredients that you can use to help detox your liver such as:
- Methionine: This is vital for detoxification and is usually found in onions, seeds, legumes, fish, eggs, garlic, and meat.
- Vitamin K: Alfalfa sprouts and green leafy vegetables are good sources of vitamin K.
- Natural sulfur compounds: These are typically found in leeks, shallots, garlic, eggs, onions, and cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cabbage.
- Selenium: Several good sources of the antioxidant, Selenium include brown rice, seafood, Brazil nuts, garlic, kelp, wheat germ, molasses, onions, and whole-grains.
- Antioxidants: Antioxidants exist in great amounts, particularly in raw juices such as dandelion, carrot, apple, celery, pear, beetroot, and green drinks from spirulina and chlorella and fresh fruits, specifically kiwi fruit and citrus.
- Arginine: This nutrient actually helps the liver to detoxify ammonia, which is a harmful waste product of protein metabolism. It is found in legumes such as lentils, peas, and beans and other foods such as walnuts, oats, carob, and wheat germ.
- Essential fatty acids: Essential fatty acids help to maintain healthy membranes in your body’s cells, where more of those acids are required for healthy liver function.
Some essential fatty acids include / may be obtained through:
- Fish oil
- Cod liver oil
- Seafood
- Sardines
- Herring
- Mackerel
- Mullet
- Tuna
- Calamari
- Salmon
- Blue eye cod
- Blue mussels
- Trout
- Fresh avocado
- Legumes (lentils, peas, beans)
- Fresh raw nuts and seeds
- Wheat germ
- Whole grain
- Green vegetables such as:
- Green peas and green beans
- Spinach
- Cold pressed vegetable
- Eggplant
- Seed oils
- Freshly ground seeds, especially flax seeds
- Blackcurrant seed oil
- Evening primrose oil
- Start flower oil
4. The fourth and final step is to help restore your liver’s health by utilizing supportive herbs and nutrients. Several nutrients that support the liver are natural beta carotene, and B-complex, C, E.
Herbs such as turmeric, thistle, globe artichoke and dandelion will also help. Besides, there are several important amino acids that can aid in the repair of the liver’s health.
REMEMBER: If your liver becomes clogged and restricts your ability to properly digest and pass out the food that you consume, this shows that your body, specifically your liver needs to be detoxed.
Detoxing your liver will not only help you digest your food better, but it is also a smart investment to proactively prevent chronic or life-threatening illnesses that may strike in the future.
Downsides To Detox
For most people, detoxing is typically an extremely positive experience. However, for some who rely on caffeinated beverages, the initial experience can be uncomfortable, to some extent.
Even though many people report benefits such as mental clarity, increased energy, and improved well-being, some experienced other symptoms including fatigue, mild depression, irritability, foggy thinking, and headaches.
The explanation is simple: As you burn body fat to fuel your day-to-day activities, the oil-soluble toxins you’ve stored in your fat are released, sometimes causing distress as they recirculate through the system.
If you’ve been smart in your liver detox routine, you may not experience any symptoms. Nonetheless, if you feel headachy, grouchy, or tired, don’t lose hope. Just simply drink more water, give your body some downtime, and realize that these symptoms show that the detox process is working.
As the toxins are cleared from your system, you’ll begin to feel better in no time!

4| Liver Cleansing Smoothie

I’ve known many people who have fell ill or even passed away because of their livers being overworked. If there’s one organ in the body that deserves a Noble Prize for its much-appreciated role in detoxifying the body is the liver.
That doesn’t really sound like much work, does it? I agree. But, when you consider the amount of toxins that you put in your body each day, you’ll have to wonder how such a small organ manages to effectively carry out its detox function.
This Liver Cleansing Smoothie contains ingredients such as spinach, grapefruit, apple, and lime, all of which contain vitamins and minerals to keep your liver healthy and well-protected.
This liver cleansing smoothie also contains IdealLean Pina Colada to provide you that extra protein punch.
INGREDIENTS
- 1/4 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 1 scoop Pina Colada
- ½ grapefruit, juiced
- 1 cup spinach
- ½ banana, frozen
- 1/4 cup apple with skin, diced

(Hold on, let me catch my breath.)
Good, now I called it the Cherry-Berry Detox Smoothie. It’s packed with antioxidants and greens to power your detox processes, which is essential during the Christmas season.

I can’t think of a better vegetable to use as a base for a detox drink than the beetroot.
