Colon Cleansing – The Complete Guide

Colon Cleansing - The Complete Guide 1

There is a lot of talk about colon cleanses, especially as it relates to discussions centered around health and weight loss. There are those who believe there are many benefits to a colon cleanse, while others believe that colon cleanses are more hype than function.

There is also a lot of ambiguity about what a colon cleanse actually is, what it entails, how it could potentially help or hurt, and how to go about the process of colon cleansing. This article seeks to clear up all the confusion and offer all the information needed to better understand colon cleanses so you can make an informed decision.

The Colon Explained

The colon is an essential organ that is part of the digestive system and necessary for the proper overall function of digestion and health. One end of the colon is connected to the small intestine, while the other end of the colon is connected to the rectum.

The colon is heavily responsible for absorbing water and minerals, while also eliminating waste from the body. As the food is consumed muscle contractions called peristalsis transport food through the digestive tract. The body takes in vital nutrients and calories and moves the food to the small intestine.

Leftover waste material is then moved to the colon, which is mostly liquid. The colon then works to remove waste and stool while also balancing electrolytes and ph. On average, it takes food roughly 36 hours to move through the digestive system and leave the body (Pietro, 2018).

Bacteria present in the colon also serve several significant functions including maintaining proper pH levels, protecting the body from harmful microorganisms, processing food particles, and synthesizing certain vitamins (Pietro, 2018).

What is a Colon Cleanse?

A colon cleanse, which is sometimes referred to as colonic hydrotherapy or irrigation, is the process of flushing the colon with fluids as a means of removing waste buildup. The practice of colon cleansing dates back to ancient times, and the perceived benefits of the practice are based on the idea that a buildup of digestive waste contributes to toxin buildup in the body, which can be harmful to health.

There are various methods of colon cleansing, some involving procedures done outside the home, while other methods of colon cleansing can be self-administered and done in the comfort of your own home.

Procedures that are done outside the home are typically completed by medical professionals at an office, while at-home products can often be purchased at local drug stores or online. Some common methods include laxatives, enemas, and herbal teas.

Types of Colon Cleanses

There is not a one size fits all when it comes to a colon cleanse. There is a host of different colon cleanse options available to those who find themselves interested in trying one.

1| Colonic Irrigation

This is a procedure done by colonic hygienists or colon hydrotherapists. The procedure involves lying on a table while a low-pressure pump or gravity-based reservoir flushes several gallons of water through a small tube that has been inserted in the rectum. Once the water has reached the colon, the hygienist or therapist typically massages the abdomen.

Then the water is released like a normal bowel movement which flushes out the fluids and waste products. The process can be repeated and generally lasts up to an hour. In some instances, a variety of water pressure and temperatures are used, and water can be combined with herbs, coffee, enzymes, or probiotics (WebMD, 2008).

2| Juices and Smoothies

Juice and smoothie cleanses are typically beverages packed with fruits and vegetables designed to promote the release of toxins and waste. These blends contain fiber and nutrients such as Vitamin C that help cleanse the colon according to some research.

  • Popular juices include apple juice, lemon juice, and vegetable juices. While smoothies tend to be rich in leafy greens and fibrous fruits (White, 2019).

3| Herbal Teas

Herbal teas are another popular means of colon cleansing. These teas tend to be packed with laxative herbs such as psyllium, aloe vera, marshmallow root, and slippery elm which promote digestion and relieve constipation.

  • Herbs like ginger, garlic, and cayenne pepper are also common as they possess antimicrobial phytochemicals that are believed to fight against bad bacteria (White, 2019).

4| Saltwater Flush

A saltwater flush involves mixing salt (sea salt or Himalayan salt) with lukewarm water. This method is thought to be especially beneficial for people dealing with irregularity and constipation. When the saltwater solution is consumed quickly on an empty stomach it typically stimulates a need to use the bathroom shortly after.

  • A ratio of 2 teaspoons of salt to a cup of water is recommended. A study conducted in 2010 suggested that saltwater cleanses could aid in clearing the colon, especially when paired with certain yoga poses (White, 2019).

5| Probiotics

A probiotic cleanse involves the addition of probiotics to the diet.

  • This can be done by adding certain foods such as yogurt, kimchi, pickles, and other fermented food items that are rich in probiotics.
  • This can also be done by adding probiotic supplements.

Probiotics work by adding good bacteria to the gut and partner with fiber and resistant starches to cleanse the colon. Probiotics are also known to promote regularity and combat inflammation (White, 2019).

6| Enemas

Enemas are seen as a simple and noninvasive colon cleanse. It requires the use of an enema bag and the process involves heating up distilled water until it is warm (not hot). The enema bag hangs from a high point (i.e., a door handle or drawer) so that it can flow freely but not too high so the pressure is manageable.

While laying on the right side olive oil can be used to lubricate the anal region so the tip of the tube can be inserted into the anus. Once this has been done, the clamp can be used to release the flow of water until one feels the urge to have a bowel movement.

Then the tube is gently removed and one can sit on the toilet and have a bowel movement. While on the toilet gently massage of the abdomen to stimulate the colon can be done which will help the release process. This process can be repeated a couple of times as needed.

Colon Cleanse Benefits

There is some controversy regarding the benefit claims of a colon cleanse. People who participate in colon cleanses have reported numerous benefits to various systems in the body. Some of the proposed benefits of colon cleansing are as follows (Gaiam, 2021):

1| Improves Digestion

When a colon cleanse is done it moves waste through the digestive tract, making way for nutrient absorption. This enhances the ability of the body to break down food and hold onto vital nutrients that promote health and wellness. It also allows waste to pass more easily and quickly through the system.

2| Enhanced Energy

A colon cleanse removes waste and toxins from the body. When this occurs, the energy that was being used to force waste through the intestines is able to be refocused elsewhere. This means the body can utilize that energy to improve other functions such as blood circulation and restful sleep, which in turn boosts overall energy levels.

3| Prevents Constipation And Maintains Regularity

As a backup of waste is pushed from the body it clears the digestive tract so that waste can move more freely. This eliminates constipation and promotes regular bowel movements decreasing the risk of issues such as hemorrhoids and varicose veins.

4| Weight Loss

Colon cleanses have the potential to aid in weight loss, with some people reporting weight loss of up to 20 pounds following a colon cleanse. This is because the cleanse removes the buildup of excess mucus that is stuck to the intestinal walls. Following this, the metabolism can be boosted making it more effective and quicker at breaking down food.

5| Improved Concentration

When there are toxins stored in the body it can keep the body from being able to absorb nutrients needed for the brain to function at optimal levels. When the colon is cleansed, it can better absorb nutrients that aid your brain’s ability to focus and remember information.

6| Better Nutrient and Vitamin Absorption

When the colon is cleansed it is better able to transport in vitamins and nutrients to the bloodstream, because the removed waste provides a clear path for those nutrients to be filtered throughout the body.

7| Reduced Risk of Colon Cancer

The removal of stagnant waste from the body reduces the risk of polyps, cysts, and cancerous growths that can form in the colon when toxins sit unchecked in the gastrointestinal tract.

8| Stabilizes pH Levels in the Bloodstream

Acid-forming foods and a diet that lacks in protein can cause blockages. Over time the tissue of the colon becomes inflamed and decreases its function. When this happens yeasts, mold, fungus, bacteria, parasites, and even fecal matter can enter the bloodstream and connected tissue, which throws pH balance off.

When toxins are removed from the colon it keeps pH in balance and aids the colon in doing its job which is taking in nutrients and allowing water to pass through.

9| Improved Fertility

Colons that are full of a buildup of waste can actually weigh down on the uterus and surrounding reproductive organs. This can cause a strain that makes it more difficult for women to conceive.

Additionally, if too much fat is present in food that is taken into the body and is not purged quickly, it can also make the process of getting pregnant more difficult. Cleansing the colon can remove chemicals and toxins that can negatively impact eggs and sperm.

Colon Cleanse Risks

Despite the perceived benefits, a colon cleanse does not come without risks, and the risk can be quite serious if you are not careful. Some of the more minor side effects of a colon cleanse can include cramping, bloating, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea.

Other more significant concerns related to colon cleanses include:

1| Dehydration

A colon cleanse can cause the removal of fluids in addiction to the removal of waste. The removal of too much fluid without it being replenished via consuming adequate amounts of water can cause dehydration. Minor dehydration can create symptoms like cramps, headaches, fatigue, and dizziness. Extreme dehydration can lead to issues such as kidney failure and even seizures.

2| Bowel Perforation

Tears in the wall of the lower intestine are called bowel perforations. These are medical emergencies and can occur when a colon cleanse takes place. Symptoms of a bowel perforation start with pain, chills, fever, and nausea and quickly escalate. Bowel perforation can be fatal and not caught in time.

3| Infection

Unhealthy bacteria can sometimes enter the lower portion of the digestive system during a colon cleanse because of the tools and fluids being used during the procedure. Healthy bacteria that fight against infection can also be removed during colon cleanses, leaving the body more susceptible to infection and illness (Schaefer, 2018).

4| Electrolyte Imbalance

A colon cleanse also runs the risk of causing an imbalance between the levels of electrolytes in the body such as potassium and sodium. These chemicals are responsible for sending signals across cells. Changes in electrolyte balance can be particularly dangerous for people who have kidney disease, heart disease, or other health conditions. Loss of consciousness and kidney damage are among some of the potential effects (Schaefer, 2018).

The risk of experiencing complications increases if you have conditions such as Diverticulitis, Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s disease, severe hemorrhoids, tumors in the rectum or colon, recent bowel surgery, and heart or kidney disease. In some severe instances, coffee enemas sometimes used in colon cleanses have been linked to several deaths (Picco, 2020).

Colon Cleanse Costs

The cost of a colon cleanse can vary drastically depending on the method or procedure used. Colon cleanse therapies that can be self-administered and done at home tend to fall on the lower end of the price spectrum, starting as low as $15 for a bag enema up to roughly $75 for pills, juices, shakes, or teas.

Meanwhile colon cleanse procedures done at a facility can range between $55-$95 per session depending on the facility and the location, according to the Colon Therapists Network (Marie, 2021).

Precautions

To ensure safety and good health, there are some steps you should take prior to and during a colon cleanse. The following are just a few steps to take:

1| Do Your Research

There are a variety of colon cleanse methods, programs, and procedures that you can choose from. Some programs can be purchased in store and others online. Many of the colon cleanse procedures are done in doctor’s offices or clinics.

Meanwhile, other types of colon cleanse methods can be completed from home. Regardless of the route taken, it is important to be well informed about the method you choose and weigh the risk versus benefits.

If opting to go with a colon hygienist or therapist, ensure the provider you choose is reputable and uses disposable equipment that has not been used previously.

2| Consult A Physician

A colon cleanse might not be a good option for everyone. Individuals with certain health conditions might experience harm or be at higher risk for health complications by performing a colon cleanse.

Thus, discussing your options with a medical professional and getting the green light will ensure the best chances of maintaining good health during the process. Doctors can also offer advice and even recommendations to help guide you in the proper direction.

3| Remain Hydrated

Colon cleanses flush toxins from the body over a particular period of time, generally ranging somewhere between a day to a few days. This quick flushing also removes fluids from the body which can leave you feeling fatigued, dizzy, and even lead to blood pressure and heart issues.

Thus, ensuring adequate amounts of water are taken in will prevent chronic complications and allow toxins and waste to flow freely and easily through the body. Approximately 6-8 glasses of water per day are recommended for most adults, although slightly increasing daily intake might be necessary to maintain proper hydration levels.

4| Avoid Strenuous Activity

As toxins, waste, and fluids are being purged from the body, you might find yourself more easily tired and fatigued. Much like dehydration, too much activity can lead to sickness, dizziness, fainting, and other health issues. Limiting strenuous activity during this period of time or following a colon cleanse procedure will ensure overall health and safety during this process.

5| Remember Colon Cleanses Are Short-Term

A colon cleanse should be a short-term procedure or process used every now and then, and not a regular go-to. A cleanse that is dragged out for a long period of time or done repeatedly in short-term intervals can put stress on the body’s gastrointestinal systems and create complications and symptoms such as headaches, migraines, nausea, chronic fatigue, cramping, bloating, and others.

Thus, sticking to a single procedure done once in a blue moon or a cleanse program that is only a few days will reduce strain on your body and ensure health.

Ways To Promote Colon Health

If you decide not to go the route of a colon cleanse, there are things you can do that will promote colon health and aid the body’s natural processes of cleansing itself.

  • One such step to take is making good food choices. This means taking in more nutritious food and limiting or eliminating processed foods and foods high in sugar, among other foods. Making better food choices has the greatest ability to improve colon and overall health outcomes.
  • Along with that comes adding more fibrous foods to the diet. Soluble and insoluble fiber can help resolve gastrointestinal problems such as constipation, diverticular disease, and colorectal cancer. The recommended daily dose of fiber is roughly 25-30 grams.
  • Proper hydration can also promote a healthy colon. This keeps waste and toxins flowing through the colon so they can exit the body instead of sitting and building up.
  • Avoiding tobacco can work to keep chances of colorectal cancer low.
  • Regular colon screenings beginning at age 50 (sooner if there is family history or certain risk factors) can help catch any issues that may arise.

Final Thoughts

There is a lot to take into consideration if you are considering a colon cleanse. Being well informed by taking the time to do thorough research on various methods, costs, and providers, as well as potential risks and benefits can help you to make a well-informed decision regarding whether a colon cleanse is right for you. It is important to note that in general the body is highly effective at removing waste and toxins on its own.

Thus, for many people a colon cleanse is not a necessity and rather a luxury pursued for their own personal reasons. If you decide a colon cleanse is a good route to take for you, it is important to take the proper precautions to ensure the chances of the cleanse being successful and resulting in positive benefits.

It is also important to note that without accompanying lifestyle changes following a colon cleanse the likelihood of experiencing short-term effects and having a repeat of negative health problems down the line is very likely.

Sticking to a healthy diet, drinking enough water, and getting exercise will be key to maintaining long-term success. Stay well and take care of that colon!
